Soaping... our absolute FAVORITE hobby here on the farm! Crafting our own goat milk soap started in 2008 when I was diagnosed with psoriasis. Instead of depending on steroid creams to calm my itchy, uncomfortable skin, I chose to go natural. Prior to 2008, I had already been making my own baby powders, herbal teas, salves, and insect repellents- but never had I made my own soap yet. I was too uncomfortable with all of the "scientific jargon" that came along with the soap making recipes I researched. Soap making seemed more like a chemistry experiment than an actual home crafted recipe of old. I had been discouraged in trying it on my own due to the mentality that soap making can be dangerous, must be an EXACT science, and must have perfect measurements using only scientific calculations. But having psoriasis gave me the courage to look past the "scientific" aspect of soap making and find the actual purpose of soap making in the first place: to craft homemade soaps for skin healing purposes. I have always had such a deep respect for the times before us, when keeping the home also meant survival. Home crafted soap was never meant to be a chemistry experiment- it was made using the items at hand (during that time it was wood ash and lard) to be a provision for the family- clean skin. So, I looked past the science of it all (I'm sure you can tell by now that I am not a huge chemistry fan!) and found a wonderful mentor in soap making. She taught me many different recipes used from many generations past, and from those recipes, I have created my own. Through the years since then, I have become very comfortable with the soap making process and consider it yet another home crafted recipe in my kitchen. It may be a scientific experiment for some, but for me, it is a well loved, well used recipe with a dash of this and a sprinkle of that. Many of my soaps are crafted for specific purposes (like sensitive skin, antibacterial properties, insect repellent, exfoliant, moisturization), but many of my soaps are also crafted for fun by adding colors and unique natural fragrances. Soaping is an art, dear friends, and therefore must be crafted as such! Included in my goat milk soaps is another passion of mine: our own herbs. We grow a few small medicinal herb gardens on our property and truly enjoy incorporating those herbs into our soaps either alone for exfoliant purposes, powdered for soap colorants, or infused for medicinal benefits. So, what started as a very timid approach to a natural solution has now become a full time hobby shared with our community through local farmers markets, shops, festivals, and online. And my psoriasis- the reason I even started soap making in the first place?Cleared up in most areas and well-managed in others! Showers are no longer "torture" to me- showers are actually the relief my skin needs! You have no idea what a complete turn around that statement is compared to years ago! I am so thankful for the knowledge shared with me in crafting my own natural skin care products, and so very blessed by our Creator who provided the gifts from nature needed to keep our skin healthy naturally!
